Welcome to KatrinaKaren.com

I finally completed the move to a new website after a few weeks of trying to figure out how to implement the changes. I am now starting from scratch in terms of SEO (search engine optimization) but I did not give much thought to SEO in the previous blog so not much harm was done, I think. I hope I have placed enough preventive measures against vulnerabilities in my new website. Having gone through website rebuilding, I can always create a new one should this one encounters a problem in the future. (This is not a sound advice for those setting up their websites. This is me trying to play cool and unfazed over stressful matters like website downtime, hackers, trojans and viruses. So do not take my word for this. Always have a backup and maintenance plan.)

Let me walk you through the website and let me be your tour guide. The  first part of the homepage is a slider. The front page opens with a slide of my current mantra: Dream. Create. Love. Repeat.  On the right side of the header, there are links to the different pages of the website.

When viewed on devices with smaller screens, the menu can be found on the upper left part of the header.

The slide automatically shifts to another one but you can also click on that arrow button to swipe to the next slide. The next slide introduces me, the website owner, and what this website is all about. When you click the “Read more”,  a window opens with my about-me page.  I wish I had a newer photo and had photo shoot specifically for the site. I no longer look like this person in the photo. I was thinner and younger in this photo. On second thought, let’s stick to this photo.  Ha!

The next slide has a link to my art portfolio. I am happy that I was able to set this up. I was too lazy to set it up in the previous website because the main page was already the blog itself. I was trying to figure out how to incorporate it with theunstressed.com. Now that it is KatrinaKaren.com, it is all about me so it is easier to include my art. (That sentence sounded so narcissistic  but you get the drift.)

I hope you also noticed my logo.  It is k-squared for the double “K” in my name.  My father taught me my signature when I was kid so I always sign with k-squared even before I learned what squared in Mathematics meant. I guess I was pre-destined to major in Math in the future.  (Yes, I have a Mathematics degree which I now conveniently use in estimating pixels and ratios in art.)

If you scroll down my site, you can read my recent blog posts. I was able to get my blog posts from the old blog. I am just glad I was able to retrieve seven years of writing so you may find some of my photos marked with theunstressed.com. I will not be editing some of those photos. I am still in the process of checking broken links. I had 380+ posts. I don’t know if I have the time to change the watermark of the photos inside those 380+ posts.

Getting Some Nuffnang Love

I love writing and blogging contests. Maybe because I won in the first contest I joined.  I lost in a few. But that did not dampen my spirit.

So, I joined and joined.

I got the consolation prizes delivered last week.

Goodbye, germs! I got the Safeguard gift pack which I shared with my family.

And the Php1,000 Sodexo gift certificate.

I gave Php400 to my aunts. We bought Selecta Cornetto with the Php100 so I am left with Php500 which I will use to buy stuff from Watsons!

Watsons just opened in my city. I was not able to check it out because of the crowds. Soon!

Here’s what I got from Benetton!

If you have a blog and have not joined Nuffnang, you should.  I have not really cashed out with my Nuffnang ad revenues but, with all the freebies I got, I will not worry about it even if I cash out in 2 years or more. Metro Manila bloggers have better opportunities than those in provinces (like me) because they get to enjoy a lot of free movie screenings. Nevertheless, I am still happy with my loot!

Thanks, Nuffnang!

Owning a Blog

This is not my first blog. I started toying the idea of creating a website to earn money in 2006. I had a grand dream of creating a website and sit pretty while revenues keep coming in.  I realized that it was not as easy as I though it would be. HA!

I started the website for the wrong reasons.  Ultimately, it did not succeed.  Besides,  I did not have fun creating it.

I did not stop there. I created another blog similar to this one but I distanced myself from it. I wrote posts where I think would yield great SEO (search engine optimization).  If my friends find that blog, I do not think they would know it was me writing it. It was hard for me to maintain that blog and I was having hard time updating it.

Content , they say, is king.  It is a challenge to write interesting content.  I try to visualize who I am writing the content for and I try to keep it engaging.

Last year, I decided to change my mindset about blogging. I started writing about my experiences in my own voice. I now write like I am talking to a friend. I stopped worrying about earning from it.  I just gave it a go and, a year later,  I am still enjoying the process.

I built a blog almost from scratch. Instead of going through free hosting sites, I went for a self-hosted site. I chose a WordPress platform because I have heard wonderful things about it.

You can also build a website even without experience.  There are helpful sites like http://www.hereshowtomakeawebsite.com/ that can guide you into creating one. Although content is king, you still need at least a workable space where you can start building your content. Find your niche. I suggest that it has to be something you are interested in because it is difficult to write about something when you heart is not into it. You have to enjoy what you do.

Photo of the Day

This week, Shadz sponsored a blog meme for the BC Bloggers.  All I have to do is share a photo (or photos) and let readers write a story about the photo (or photos).

I work from home and this is what my desk look like.

What can you infer about me when you see this picture? Ha! I can take harsh criticisms but break it to me gently.  😉

Albert Einstein got my back on this one. 😀

30-day Blogging Challenge

This April, I will be on a self-imposed blogging challenge.

I created the graphics using Pantone’s colors for Sping 2012.

When I started blogging, my goal was to write one blog post a day. I am still not reaching that goal. There are days that I don’t feel like writing.  I read somewhere that you need to write 1,000 words a day to be a good writer.  So instead of worrying what to write, I have already written down the topics so I have a guide. I cannot guarantee 1,000 words or good writing but if I write something everyday, I believe it will improve my writing a teeny-tiny bit . (Or maybe not.) What I know for sure is that: In the future, when I look back at April 2012, I’ll know what I did during this month. 😉

So, here’s the challenge:  I will write about the chosen topic of the day. I chose some of the topics to force me to do something creative and write about it.  I hope to tap my creative side (if I still have one). The topics chosen are based on my interests.

If you are a blogger, you are free to join me. Let me know by leaving a comment so I can read your entries, too. 😀
