The Gift of Sight

The first poem that I memorized and recited was “All Things Bright and Beautiful”. There was a stanza that says:

He gave us eyes to see them,
And lips that we might tell
How great is God Almighty,
Who has made all things well.

I am grateful for my gift of sight. Those who know me might wonder why because I wear eyeglasses regularly. In fact, I started wearing eyeglasses since I was 11 years old. That said, there was a period between my late teens and early adult life that I did not wear them for more than 8 years until I had vertigo and wearing prescription lenses somehow eased the dizziness.  I have to admit that wearing eyeglasses is cumbersome. The part that hooks to the temple can cause some strain in my ear area. The part that hangs on the nose bridge slips now and then when I sweat. After wearing glassing for a few hours, I can feel its weight on my nose and ears. (Yes, I am a picky astigmatic person.  Ha!)

There is a bright side to my woes.

There are already lightweight and elastic eyeglasses available in the market. Most eyeglasses come in different colors, shapes and designs. Eyeglasses have become a fashion item and I have seen several frames in animal print design. Cool huh? Plus, several manufacturers have established their online presence by setting up online stores with a variety of style options to choose from.  I am impressed at those manufacturers with a good corporate social responsibility. I have seen one company that gives a pair of eyeglasses for free to those who need them every time someone buys a pair from them.

The gift of sight is not just having a vision in a physical sense but using that vision to help others.
