I am often asked what websites to visit when learning how to paint. I would immediately reply, “Youtube!”
My watercolor art journey started two years ago and I have learned a lot since then. I still continue to learn. Albert Einstein said that once you stop learning, you start dying. So I chose to learn unceasingly (Well, with leisure on the side).
I often refer to Anna Mason’s tutorials when it comes to botanicals. I love to paint flowers. Here is her tutorial in painting a rose:

Here is my version using one of her watercolor painting of a rose as a model.
Two years ago, I came across a tutorial on how to draw a realistic eye.

I think I have improved the technique since then.
I continue to practice. I think it is the best way to learn. Put on the 10,000 hours of work and eventually, I get better than the last time. Here are my recent original botanical paintings.
I also follow a lot of watercolor artists on Instagram. I am currently part of the @wgcollab on instagram, where different watercolor artists share their painting techniques every day. Follow us there to learn more techniques. Use #wgcollab16 hashtag to find the videos. The videos are also posted on Facebook via Watercolour Gallery’s page. Here is my painting video I made for this month.
[facebook url=”https://www.facebook.com/watercolourgallery/videos/1207394052625664/” /]July is also the World Watercolor Month. Find inspiration using the hashtag #WorldWatercolorMonth on Facebook and Instagram.

WOWWWW!!! You’re talented!! And yes I believe practicing pays off too. All your paintings and drawings look really beautiful! Makes me want to try my hand at it as well!
Amazing!!!!!! I should try this!!!! But i paint using acrylic
Amazing work! I love the flower. I know it is not easy to handle water colours.. but you are doing a great job!
Anna Mason is so talented! I love her accent too. you’ve done amazingly well yourself! i wish i can paint like you.
Wow, you’re so talented and kudos to you for enhancing your talent and skill. I agree with Einstein, never stop learning.
Wow I’m impressed. I can’t draw a decent flower to save my life. So I really admire those who can. You are an artist sis. Keep it up!

Beautiful artworks. I also like to sketch and paint. Nowadays, it’s easy to learn with the many Youtube instructional videos. Keep it up and continue to work on your passion. 🙂
Nice post. I really enjoy it. Thanks for sharing the knowledge of how to paint.
You’ve learned a lot coupled with your determination to pursue this passion. Techniques for this kind of drawing must be learned and you know how to handle the flaws. I admire your talent and skills in which you could be a professional someday.
You do have talent in the arts. This are all great masterpieces and are all beautiful.
I really know how difficult it is to do realstic water colors. In my earlier job I interviewed about 20 people over a few months before I found my guy who does heavenly work on water colors…
It’s good to keep learning especially if you’re passionate about something. I’m glad you continue to improve your skills and it’s good to know that youtube is an awesome platform to use if you really want to learn!
Amazing. Your flowers really look very good. The style you use on the petals make them look so real and delicate.
WOW!!! You got an amazing talent there! Oh, how I wished I could do such thing but sad to say that even a flower, I can’t perfect it. lol
those are lovely! i love watercolour painting but i need more practice myself
Thank you for these tips Kat. Practice really makes progress. I’m saving up to enroll at Anna Mason’s class hopefully start of next year. For the meantime, with world watercolor month, I’ll try to simultaneously practice how to draw and color and fervently hope that I can accomplish things I have put off for a long time. Thanks you again for sharing!
